APHA require the production of a lineage of mice (mus musculus) which are homozygous for a bank-vole (Myodes glareolus) prion transgene. Prions cause transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) such as mad cow disease in cattle which is associated with variant CJD in humans.
